Such is Life.
Last week, while working on the caravan, I managed to accidentally stab my right eye with a flathead screwdriver. I was trying to unbend a panel pin, all my pressure was upwards and when the screwdriver slipped my arm bent back on itself forcefully bringing my hand to my face. I collapsed my eyeball and lacerated my cornea, iris & pupil, and went into theatre the same day so the surgeon could refill my eye with jelly and stitch it up. Currently I can only see light and colour out of my eye, it’s like looking through frosted glass, and my sight is going to stay this way for at least the next 6 to 12 months, at which point I should be able to get a corneal transplant which will correct this opacity. Until then I will get used to this new way of looking, of having a ghostly presence on the right side of my vision. I don’t know how this is going to affect my work, I feel a mixture of sadness, fear and intrigue. I think it could precipitate an interesting new direction, who knows, we shall see.
I very much doubt they read this but I must say a massive thankyou to my eye consultant and the nurses in A&E, ENT & the Eye Department of Wrexham Maelor Hospital. The NHS is a precious resource that we don’t treat well enough. Thankyou also to my girl, for looking after me.
